Calcium Glycerophosphate

Calcium glycerophosphate is a mineral compound that provides a source of calcium and phosphate ions, which are essential for healthy teeth and bones. When calcium glycerophosphate is added to toothpaste, it can help to strengthen tooth enamel by promoting the remineralization process.

Remineralization occurs when calcium and phosphate ions are deposited back into the tooth enamel, helping to repair small areas of damage and prevent further decay. In addition to its remineralization benefits, calcium glycerophosphate can also help to neutralize acids in the mouth that can contribute to tooth decay.

Overall, calcium glycerophosphate is a beneficial ingredient in toothpaste that can help to support healthy teeth and prevent tooth decay. However, it is important to note that toothpaste alone cannot provide complete oral care, and it should be used in conjunction with regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups for optimal oral health.

Calcium glycerophosphate is considered safe for use in toothpaste and other oral care products when used as directed. It has been approved for use in cosmetics and personal care products by the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which sets safety standards for cosmetic ingredients in the EU.

Sodium Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral that can help prevent tooth decay and cavities. It works by strengthening tooth enamel and making it more resistant to the acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. Fluoride can also help repair early stages of tooth decay before it becomes a cavity.

The use of fluoride in dental products has been widely accepted and endorsed by major dental organizations worldwide, including the World Health Organization, the American Dental Association, and the European Federation of Periodontology. The European Union and Germany have regulations in place regarding the use of fluoride in dental products.

In the EU, fluoride may be used in toothpaste, mouthwash, and other dental products at concentrations up to 1,500 parts per million (ppm) for adults and up to 500 ppm for children under the age of six. The use of fluoride in drinking water is also regulated by the EU, with a maximum concentration of 1.5 milligrams per liter (mg/L).

In Germany, the use of fluoride in dental products is also regulated. The maximum concentration of fluoride allowed in toothpaste for adults is 1,500 ppm, and for children under the age of six, it is 500 ppm. The concentration of fluoride in drinking water is also regulated, with a maximum concentration of 1.5 mg/L.

Overall, the use of fluoride in dental products has been shown to be safe and effective in preventing tooth decay and cavities. However, it is important to follow the recommended guidelines and regulations regarding fluoride use to ensure its safety and effectiveness.

Hydrated Silica

Silica in kids’ toothpaste serves as a gentle abrasive agent, aiding in effective plaque and stain removal without causing damage to developing teeth. Its mild abrasive properties contribute to a thorough cleaning while maintaining enamel integrity. Silica is a common ingredient in toothpaste formulations for children, ensuring a safe and efficient oral hygiene experience.

The application of hydrated silica in toothpaste offers several advantages. The variable adjustability of its properties allows for targeted adaptation of abrasiveness, crucial for meeting diverse requirements (e.g., low abrasion for sensitive toothpaste, high abrasion for whitening toothpaste). Silica abrasives are widely used because they are inert and do not interact with fluoride ions, providing formulation benefits in toothpaste. The versatility and flexibility of silica abrasives make them an effective component for developing toothpaste with varied cleaning and care properties (© Deutscher Ärzteverlag | DZZ | Deutsche Zahnärztliche Zeitschrift | 2018; 73 (2))
